Craft Room Renovations Part 1-Curtain Doors

I was wandering through the fabric store one day over Christmas break when I found this fabric on sale that I really liked.  I decided I would use it to make a curtain door for my craft room closet.  I didn't really like the folding doors that were already on it because it was hard to get in and out of.  I purchased the fabric and took it home and decided I didn't like the color of the room with this fabric, so I decided to just go ahead and paint the room.  That totally makes sense, right?  That was the beginning of my craft room renovations.

So over about 5 random days I made these curtains.  Why is there a big blue strip at the bottom?  That would be because the fabric I got was too short.  Oops.  I'm still not very good at sewing (a straight line in particular) and there was a lot of trial and error with these curtains.  In the end, I think I like them.  I'm not positive.  But I think I do.  I'm still not sure about that blue on the bottom or the actual length of the curtains.
So here are some photos.  It was hard for me to figure out the lighting and angle to take pictures so these are a little weird.  The green of the room does not really look like it does in real life.
The room is not really this shade of green.

I'm trying to organize the inside of the closet for storing all my random stuff.
So that's part 1 of the many things I have done to this room.  I know you can't wait to hear about the rest!  PS-I blame this blog for making me think I could suddenly be a DIY home decor expert.

Have you ever sewn curtains?  Or a curtain door?

Fill In the Blank Friday...

I only really watched new TV last night so I'm doing Fill in the Blank Friday from the little things we do.  Here we go.

1. If my house was on fire and I could only grab 3 things I would grab... probably my laptop (or ipad), Hobie, and a handful of clothes from my closet.  I assume B could get out on his own and would bring all the rest of my stuff.  I don't know, this is a hard question.

2. A smell I really like is good food cooking in the slow cooker or cupcakes or a pizza or garlic bread.  I hate pretty much all perfumes and scented items so it's got to be something real.

3. Something you might not know about me is that I walk really loud.  I actually didn't know that until this weekend when my husband and "friend" told me that.  Oh well, I guess I'm really dense or something.  I have also recently become addicted to Minute Maid Frozen Lemonade pops.  I need them.

4. Some of my favorite websites to putter about on are all those cool blogs out there plus, Office Tally, TV Line, Watch With Kristen, Food Gawker and I have lately become extremely obsessed with Young House Love.

5. This weekend I will be hanging out with my sister-in-law briefly tonight, making some wine charms, working on my big craft room renovation and hopefully hanging out with some of my friends at some point.

6. Nothing makes me happier than (I'm stealing this) waking up on Saturday and realizing it's Saturday and that I don't have to go to work and have the whole day ahead of me.  It's a big bonus if I get up and workout.  Well the happiness would be felt right after I'm done working out.

7. A bad habit I have is I don't know, I'm perfect.  I kidd.  Sometimes I listen to the TV too loud and play with my iPad too much.  I also probably watch too much TV (who am I kidding, there's no such thing as too much TV.  Speaking of TV, did you watch The Office last night? Wasn't the Michael Scott/David Brent thing super awesome? The rest of the episode was ok but the opening was awesome. My gold star for NBC Comedy Night Done Right goes to Parks and Rec. That show is hilarious. Watch it!  30 Rock was also funny especially at the end when the played that song like they do on reality TV.  I like that they made fun of reality TV since I'm pretty much a reality TV hater.  Ok end of television tangent).
OK so yeah now you know all that stuff about me.

What do you have going on this weekend?

Ice Cream or Cupcakes?

How about both rolled in to one?

This weekend a bunch of my high school friends were all in town at the same time so we got together to hang out on Saturday night.  I decided I should probably bake something (well Mo and B decided that for me).  I got a cupcake cook book for my birthday and had been wanting to try something from it.  I did not want to have 24 cupcakes laying around so making them to take somewhere else seemed like a good plan.

I perused  the book for about 2 minutes before deciding on Rocky Road cupcakes.  I remember Rocky Road as a delightful ice cream flavor from my summer working at Baskin Robbins so I assumed it would make a tasty cupcake.
Rocky Road Cupcakes adapted from the book, Cupcakes Galore
1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon slat
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
4 ounces dark chocolate
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup milk
1/2 cup mini-marshmallows
1/2 cup chocolate chips, plus 1/2 cup for topping
1/2 cup chopped walnuts, plus 1/2 cup for topping
1/2 cup white chocolate chips for topping

1-Preheat oven to 350 F
2-Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder and set aside
3-Melt chocolate.  Beat in oil, egg and vanilla.  Alternately add flour mixture and milk.  Once batter is smooth fold in marshmallows, chocolate chips and walnuts.
4-Spoon batter into cupcakes (1/2 full).  Mix the extra chocolate chips and walnuts and sprinkle over the batter.
5-Bake for 20 minute or until done
I used my mini cupcake tin for some of them and cooked them just a few minutes less than the regular cupcakes.  The cupcake batter was not very sweet (the recipe did not call for sugar) but with the marshmallows and chocolate chips melted in, it got sweeter but not overly sweet.  I might add some sugar if I make them again.  Overall they were pretty good and I look forward to trying other recipes from the book.
What's your favorite flavor of cupcake?
What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?
What other ice cream flavors would make a good cupcake?
Perhaps a nice Mint Chocolate Chip or a Neapolitan?

Bridal Shower Decor by MoYo (rhymes with Fro-yo)...

Remember my friend Morgan from such events as the A-Corn bridal shower and the Las Vegas bachelorette party?  She's also the person who presented my with the best hair accessory ever.  Well this weekend she was back in town displaying more of her wonderful and unique bridal shower planning.  Mo's sister is getting married in a couple months and this weekend was her bridal shower.

Mo showed up at my house once again with her giant suitcase in tow.  But this time it wasn't filled with clothes, it was filled with bridal shower decor for her sister.  The theme of her sister's bridal shower was "A Night Out or In" so people gave her gifts such as movie/restaurant gift cards, a picnic basket, etc.  The gifts were basically stuff for her and her future hubby to do together.  So Mo decided to make each table a different theme based on something that the bride and groom enjoy doing together.  I was amazed when she pulled these out of her suitcase.

She used photos, stickers and greeting cards to make these.  They were even cuter in person and really unique.  I heard they were a hit at the shower and her sister claims she's going to display them in her house.

She also did tons of other planning, including games and prizes.  She always goes all out for events.  You know it's going to be awesome if Mo's involved.  Here are favors she put together.  They were little bags with fortune cookies (aka a night in with take-out) and little tea infusers (it was also a tea party).  These were also really cute.

I think she did a really good job.

What's the most unique thing you've seen at a bridal shower?
Do you want Mo to plan your next party?

JM's TV Recap Is Back On...

TV has been making me cry way to much recently.  It's not good for my eyes.

How I Met Your Mother is not supposed to make me cry.  But  geez Marshall, when you said your dad was your teacher and best friend you really got me.  At least we had Robin and her bag full of goodies for some comedic relief, "Ted those kids jumped into a painting and chased a cartoon fox around for fifteen minutes. Spoon full of sugar? Grow up." in reference to Mary Poppins.

before they were robbed of their innocence (pic from tvfantic.com)
Modern Family was pretty hilarious and awkward this week.  I loved the kids' reactions to their parents' "zesty performance".  The smiling and nodding at the end was priceless as was their choice of anniversary present.  Gloria was funny too.  My husband and I were both laughing hysterically as she pleaded to the computer, "It sended! Please come back!"  I just realized that Manny wasn't in the episode.  Sads.  Seems like at least 1 kids is missing every week.  I guess they have to deal with those pesky child labor laws.

While I have not watched this week's Grey's Anatomy, I did catch up on the last two episodes this past weekend.  I love Noel Crane from Felicity and Audrey Raines from 24 (aka Scott Foley and Kim Raver-Teddy and her new husband).  I really liked that ponytail Audrey was rocking.  I definitely knew that Callie was going to get pregnant.  That is the golden rule of soap operas and nighttime soaps (rule-if you sleep with someone once that you are not supposed to you will definitely get pregnant).  I also really hate when Arizona calls her Calliope.  It really annoys me for some reason.  I'm pretty sure I cried during one if not both of these eps because Grey's Anatomy always makes me cry (oh yeah, definitely did during the first episode about the shooting).  Oh and just for fun, here's a trivia question for your guys....What two characters/actors form My So-Called Life appeared in these two eps???? Come on, you know this.

Now on to the new 3 hour NBC Comedy Night Done Right.  Well overall I thought it was pretty good.  Community was good.  I enjoyed Theo Huxtable's appearance.  That new show Perfect Couples was ok.  I will have to see a few more episodes.

The Office was funny.  I deeply enjoyed Michael's champagne celebration which included the happy version of the video he made to "talk himself down."  "Nobody talks me down, like myself in a video talking me down."  Did anyone notice that Jim was missing the whole time?  I mean he was in the cold open but then he just wasn't there anymore.  Also why are gummy worms happy and gummy bears sad?  I personally thought it would be the other way around.  PS-I would love to go roller skating with Andy (who of course enjoys "deep tracks" by the Dave Matthews Band), Dwight and Darryl.

I love Parks and Rec and am really glad its back.  I'm really enjoying Rob Lowe's character and the other new guy, Ben (?!? I think that's his name).  I like the two varying coach styles of Ron-"Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into Swansons." and Andy-"I’d say my coaching style is centered around fundamentals, with an emphasis on fun. And a second emphasis on… mental."  You should watch this show.

30 Rock was good but I'm going to need to go back and watch it again as I got wrapped up in a game of online iPad Scrabble that my husband and I had been playing back and forth and was not giving the show my full attention.

I did not watch the Indian Call Center show because I was tired and I guess I'm still holding a grudge that it took PRec's spot for the first half of the year.  Is it good?  Does anyone watch it?

Did you watch the Golden Globes?  Are you on Team Ricky Gervais is Funny Because He's Mean or Team I Hate Ricky Gervais Because He's a Jerk?  I think he's funny but mostly because of his cool accent.  Also did you hear that he's coming to the US Office?

What shows did you watch this week?

Potato-less Salad...

The other night I found myself with an abundance of cauliflower.  I was going to make this broccoli/cauliflower salad but the broccolli appeared to be pretty old so I tossed it.  So I was left with cauliflower.  I decided to 'google' it up and find something I could make with cauliflower and the stuff I already had in my house.  I really wanted to make this roasted cauliflower soup but I didn't have half of those ingredients.  Then I found this recipe.  To be honest with you, I thought it sounded kind of gross but it was pretty much the only thing I had most of the ingredients to make.  So I went for it.
It's basically a potato salad but instead of using potatoes, you use cauliflower.  I had to make a few changes and substitution (took out the hard-boiled eggs, cut the mayo down, etc) and I know many of you are going to think this is really gross but I actually ended up liking it.  I would definitely use it as a potato salad subsitution at a picnic or what not.
Cauliflower Salad (adapted from here )
1 head of cauliflower (rinsed and cut in to bite sized peices)
handful of frozen peas
1/2 red onion chopped
2 dill pickle spears chopped
1/2 cup of mayo
1/4 cup mustard (any kind but I used honey mustard because I like it a little sweet)
salt and pepper

1-Boil the cauliflower for 10 minutes until it's tender
2-Mix the mustard, mayo and salt and pepper together
3-Add everything else and mix

So, this wasn't bad for a kitchen experiement (again, I know some of you will think this sounds disgusting).  And I didn't have to waste my cauliflower.

Have you ever made something weird just to use up ingredients you had in the pantry?

30 for 30-Attempting To Become a Ski Bunny

This weekend I got to cross something else off my 30 for 30 list....skiing.  I went skiing once, when I was like 11.  It was a Girl Scout trip.  There wasn't even a ski lift.  So I don't even think it counts. My husband grew up in Maine and West Virginia. Therefore he is pretty much a skiing expert.  I have been promising him for years that we would go on a ski trip at some point but I just never made it happen.  But a couple weeks ago, I got a Groupon email for half off lift tickets to a place two and a half hours away.  So we decided to go for it.  My friend Jenni and her future husband Matt decided to tag along.  This worked out well since Matt also already knows how to ski and Jenni like me, does not.

Once we got there, we rented out equipment and headed out to the flat-ish area to test out our skis.  I ended up like this pretty fast...
So the boys decided it would probably be best if we went ahead and signed up for that first time skier lesson we had been debating taking (I also think it was a ruse for them to get away from us and ski on real slopes for awhile).  During this time we learned something about making our feet in to the shape of a pizza slice.  We also learned how to get up when you fall courtesy of Jenni who fell while standing completely still in line during our ski drills.

Finally we decided to go ahead and take the plunge and get on the ski lift.  I was really scared of the ski lifts.  I was pretty sure I wouldn't be ready to get on to it and that I would then fall right off.  That did not happen.  I made it to the top.  Now I was ready to conquer the mountain.  The first time I went down I fell three times.  After that I kind of got the hang of it (turning, the pizza slice, etc).  However, I never made it down the mountain without falling at least once.  I would be doing great, then all the sudden I would accidentally gain speed, see people way in front of me, freak out and think that I'd hit them, and then slam into the snow.  Good times.

Overall I enjoyed my ski experience and would like to try it again.  I'm pretty sore today though (and having a bit of trouble using my calf muscles).

So, that was my ski trip.
Do you ski?
Is snowboarding harder or easier?  (it looks pretty scary to me)

Fill In the Blank Friday...

OK I really didn't watch a lot of new TV this week.  I watched a lot of old Frasier episodes and the Lost finale (and then I cried and then my eyes were puffy...stupid tv).  So I decided to go ahead and participate in Fill in the Blank Friday hosted by Lauren at the little things we do.

1. I feel happy when...it's Friday at 11 AM and I've just gotten off work and I have the rest of the day ahead of me; when I'm about to eat something good; when Hobie runs to meet me when I come home; when my favorite tv shows are about to come on; when I get to hang out with all my friends (and husband) at one time......etc, etc.

2. I get silly when ...I stay up late or when I hang out with B and Hobie for long periods of time and we start talking as Hobie's voice, what we think he'd be saying or thinking at the time (yeah we are weird) or when my sister and I hang out a lot (we act weird a lot also).

3. Something that makes me sad is... when I hear about bad things happening to other people or when someone I'm close to is sad.  Or when Hobie pees on the leg of the table.

4. Something that makes me annoyed is well...ooh well I'm basically one of the most easily annoyed people in the world.  I don't want to be annoyed but I am..........mostly things that make noise like loud chewing, nail clipping, loud typing, slurping.   Stuff like that.  I wear my headphones a lot at work.  I'm sure I make these noises too I just don't like to hear them from others.  Sorry.

5. A time that I've been truly surprised....when I was 13 my parents made my dream of the year come true by having a limo pick me up and take me and 5 of my friends out to dinner.  I was also really surprised by the Christmas present my husband gave me this year.

6. I am so thankful for.... A lot of things......my husband, my dog, my family, my friends, my house, my job, my hobbies, my favorite tv shows, the giant Harris Teeter near my house, etc.

7. I feel loved when...my husband brings me coffee at work and when Hobie acts like he likes me and my friends make me giant photo collages for my birthday.

Have a great weekend!

Snow Day.....

Sometimes working for a University sucks.....budget cuts, no raises, hiring freezes, robberies (yeah we have had like 2 in the past couple years).  Sometimes it's awesome, like today when we get a SNOW DAY (you can't expect all those college kids to make it to class in the snow/ice).  While my other friends are trying to figure out how to get to work, I'm just chillaxing at home with Hobie and B (whose work trip to Atlanta has been postponed due to the cancellation of all his co-workers' flights).

Plus I get to wear my favorite snow outfit (which I wore 75% of Christmas Break)...old jeans, Uggs, a Hoodie, and a handmade scarf.
So now I'm going to go ahead and get the slow cooker back out and make some Eazy Peazy BBQ chicken.  If you are snowed in, I recommend that you do the same.

What's your favorite thing to do on a snow day?
What's your favorite cold weather meal to make?

Happy Blogaversary (Blogiversary??) to Me!!

I made it.  My first post was one year ago (well from yesterday).  I made it through a full year of blogging.  I was really scared to start a blog for some reason but 1 year ago I went ahead and took the plunge in hopes of documenting recipes and crafts that I made.  In honor of my blogaversary I made the first recipe that I put on here, Latin Chicken.  For a flashback you can check it out here, my 1st and 2nd posts.  Here's the version I made last night.  It's easy to make, not too bad for you and great for a nice winter night.

Just for fun here's a list of some of my favorites from things I posted....

Craft that Made Me Proud (even though it was really hard)

Sometimes this blog can be stressful but mostly it's been fun and a cool way to meet some new people so I think I'll stick with it for now.  Thanks for reading it!

Have you had a blogiversary?
How do you spell blogaversary?
Should I have a party to celebrate and then blog about it?
What's the best, funniest, stupidest, most informative or boring blog post I've written?

JM's Sometimes Weekly TV Recap....

Ok I think I only watched 5 new shows this week (if you count Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters) but let's just talk about the comedies..........

Well How I Met Your Mother went all Drama on me this week with the end of the episode shocker.  I'm not going to say it directly in case you didn't see but it was super sadzie.  Great performances by Jason Segel (my probable boyfriend if I wasn't married) and Alyson Hannigan.  My most important question of the show however is...when did you notice the numbers?  I noticed 50 and 49 at the start and other random ones throughout.  By 26 I was all , "B, pause it, what's up with the numbers?"  And he was all "what are you talking about?".  After that I had a hard time focusing on the show since I was yelling out the numbers as they popped up.  What about you?  Did you notice from the start?  In the middle?  Or just because you live on the West coast and heard from Twitter that there was some weird number thing in the ep?  As far as the comedy went I enjoyed the new official doppelganger Dr. Barney and how Lily was so freaked out that she had to have Barney (with sight/sound deprivation) in the room with her.  Also the montage of Robin's hilarious on air moments was great (anytime they play "Let's Go To The Mall" is usually pretty good).  And fun fact......The guy who plays Sandy Rivers is Alyson Hannigan's real life hubby!

In my opinion Luke stole the show in this week's Modern Family (well him and Lily's princess castle).  First he had his jokes about cops.  Then he became a very effective teacher for Gloria and Hailey.  "I've never taught anyone anything, but my play date cancelled so I was wide open."  Initially, Gloria went to Phil to teach her to ride a bike because she needed "somebody gentle, nurturing, like a woman."  Then we had the whole crazy guy living in a princess castle subplot.  "You are living in a little girl's toy and you have to move out."  I enjoyed the end with crazy guy and Cameron both poking their heads out of the princess castle window.  Claire was a little intense this week but I loved how when she stole Gloria's bike she shouted out "laces, mirror, bell"  per the teachings of her father.  Did you enjoy this week or think it was too "out there and unrealistic"  like this one recap I read said?

Cougar Town is becoming one of my new favorite comedies.  I was watching an old episode of Friends the other day and realized I think of Courteney Cox as Jules now instead of Monica.  That's pretty major.  Plus having a Cul-De-Sac crew is my dream.  I even live on the corner of a street with a cul-de-sac.  My favorite line of the episode though was when Bobby Cobb (love that name by the way) stated all the important things you need to know about the world today.........."Well, I should know oil spilled, black President-I love it, people watching movies on their cell phones and ohh Lady Gaga."  Yeah that pretty much covers it.  You should totally watch this show.

On a side note I just started watching Parenthood on dvd.  I think I like it although it's hard to see Lauren Graham as someone other than Lorelei.  Should I keep on watching it and try to catch up???

What did you watch this week???????

The B Mug!

Remember when I tried to make Martha Stewart's supposedly very easy etched snowflake glasses?  Yeah? Remember how it was a total failure?  I do not like total craft failures so I plugged along with a different method that day that worked out a lot better.  So I present to you the B Mug...
I made this wonderful etched glass Beer mug for B for his birthday.  As you can see from the beer residue on the bottom, he used it.

Making this was not as hard as I thought it would be.

Etched Glass Mug
Supplies-Contact paper (I found this in the home improvement section of Wal-Mart), Beer Mug (or any glass), Exacto Knife, Etching Cream (from Michael's), Computer/Printer

-I typed up a big 'B' in Microsoft word and then picked a font I liked and printed it out.
-Then I took a small piece of contact paper and traced over it with a marker.
-Then I peeled the back off the contact paper and stuck it to the mug (where I wanted the 'B' to be)
-I then carved out the 'B' with the Exacto knife (be careful because of the two holes in the B that you have to keep on the glass in order for the 'B' to look right)
-Then I painted a THICK layer of the Exacto cream on and left it on for about 2 minutes.
-Then I washed it all off.

It came out a lot better than the snowflake glasses.  Be careful with the etching cream.  You are supposed to wear gloves (I guess, so you don't accidentally etch your hand).  I would follow the directions on whatever cream you get.  We found that it was important to use a thick layer in order for it to work.

I also made my family some etched juice glasses for Christmas morning breakfast.  Those came out pretty good too.

Are you happy that I turned my Martha Stewart Craft fail day in to a success?
Did you hand make any Christmas gifts?

Making Stuff is Hard....Ebelskivers

The first thing that is hard about making Ebelskivers is pronouncing that word.  I have no idea how to pronounce it.  So let's just go ahead and call them stuffed pancakes, because that is what Ebelskivers are.

On Fristmas Morning (a fake holiday I made to celebrate with my husband back when we used to spend Christmas apart, see Fakesgiving) I decided to do something special and bring out my Stuffed Pancake pan that I got as a wedding gift.  I had only used it once so I decided it was time for round two.  I found this awesome sounding recipe for caramel and apple stuffed pancakes topped with ice cream.  Now, I know eating ice cream for breakfast is probably not that healthy but hey, it was Fristmas.

The recipe sounded easy enough.  I mean you just make caramel out of sugar.  How hard can that be?  Well after the fourth attempt and a burned finger I was about the throw in the towel on the whole stuffed pancake thing.  But I finally made something that resembled caramel so I went with it.  I'm pretty sure it was actually just burnt sugar.  Either way I managed to finish the pancakes.  They tasted kind of weird so I just added extra ice cream to cover up the odd tasting caramel and semi burnt pancakes.  Oh well.  I gave myself an A- for effort.  Next time (in like a year) I will buy pre-made caramel sauce because I think this could actually be really good.

Things started looking up again when we finally got Hobie to wear his cool new hat.
He hated it.  But I did it for his own good.  I mean it was really cold outside.

OK, so have you ever tried to make stuffed pancakes?
Have you ever had breakfast that included ice cream?
Do you know how to make caramel?  (clearly I could use some tips)

Three Birthday Cakes, Some Chicken Salad and a Hoser Hut Tee...

As I mentioned before B's birthday is on January 1st.  He was super nice in helping me paint my craft room/spare bedroom over the holiday break even though I told him I could do it by myself (I totally couldn't by the way, what?!?! you have to tape the walls before you paint?).  So I decided to go ahead and make him 2 different kinds of birthday cakes.

I actually made him 3 cakes total because I gave him a mini version of one for breakfast.  This was a recipe from his grandmother's cookbook where you add mandarin oranges (a can), 4 eggs, and a cup of vegetable oil to a box of yellow cake mix.  The frosting is a box of pudding, a 20 oz can of crushed pineapple and a container of Cool Whip mixed together.  Sounds weird but tastes good.
Breakfast Cake...
For lunch I went ahead and made him his favorite chicken salad in a bread bowl.
Chicken Salad Lunch Bowl...
In addition to the mandarin orange cake, I also made him this no-bake chocolate eclair cake.  This is very easy to make.  You need 2 small boxes of pudding, 3 cups of milk, one container (8 oz) of Cool Whip, one box of graham crackers, and 1 can of chocolate frosting.  Mix the pudding and milk and then add in the Cool Whip.  Then make a row of graham crackers in a 9x13 pan.  Top that with a layer of pudding, another row of graham crackers, a second layer of pudding and a 3rd row of graham crackers.  Melt the icing in the microwave for about 40 seconds and pour over the graham crackers.  Then refrigerate this over night.  This was very easy to make and people enjoyed it.  Or so it seemed.

One birthday boy, 2 cakes.

This picture is just to show the cool Hoser Hut tee I gave B for his birthday.  You are super cool if you know where it's from.

All in all it was a nice relaxing birthday filled with a lot of food (and Beverly Hills Cops movies-that's another story though).
Happy birthday B and Happy New Years everyone else!
